The Benefits of Creating a Positive Mental Headspace
"Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny." - Lao Tzu
Though Lao Tzu said those words over 2,500 years ago, they are just as relevant today as they were then.
Our mental headspace is a powerful place, and what we allow to occupy it can have a profound impact on our lives.
Successful people understand this.
They make a habit of focusing on their goals - and who they want to be. They still feel fear and anxiety, of course, but the power of their intentions is stronger than their doubts. This allows them to push through their worries and achieve great things.
If you are facing a challenge or obstacle in your life, don't deny it, but don't dwell on it either. Instead, magnify the good. Focus on your goals and trust that a path forward will present itself - even if you can’t quite see how or when that’s going to happen right now.
Of course, our brains do not automatically focus on the positives. We need to train them to do it. The following steps can help you get there:
Become aware of your thoughts. Acknowledge what you’re dwelling on or stressing out about. Label it.
Make a factual statement. Don’t say, “They’re forcing me to go to a conference and I am going to hate it. I don’t like traveling or socializing!” Instead, say, “I’m scheduled to go on a work trip next Thursday.”
Come up with a thought that will serve you better. "If I take greater control of my schedule, this conference will be better than last time!" Instead of wearing yourself out with back-to-back meetings, maybe you can schedule some short breaks to recharge yourself.
Don’t ignore your negativity. Use your awareness of it as a reminder to put your positivity steps into action.
Add an “I am” statement to your thought process. “I am open to this conference being an enjoyable experience.” Tying a goal to the type of person you are can help turn it into a reality.
These steps may seem a little bit overwhelming, but you do not need to work through them all at once. If it feels good to stay at step 1 for a while, do that. You’re still making progress, and you’ll reach step 5 when you’re ready.
