Do You Need to Ask for Permission or Beg for Forgiveness?

When faced with a decision at work, there are generally two approaches you can take:

  1. Ask for Permission: Wait. Wait to talk to your boss - see if they want you to do it or not. Discuss your options with your manager and use their input to formulate a plan.

  2. Beg for Forgiveness: Be proactive. Use your best judgment to make a decision in the moment - and debrief your boss later.

Which approach is better? Well, it depends on the situation. Ask yourself:

  • Can this wait?

  • Will there be negative consequences for the company if I screw up?

  • Have people told you you've gotten out in front of your skis and need to pull back in the past?

If the answer to these questions is yes, it is probably best to talk to your manager before moving forward.

If the answer is no, it’s usually better to take a proactive approach. Your manager will appreciate you showing initiative and not putting more problems on their plate.

What’s your go-to approach at work? Could you stand to be more proactive? Or should you start being a bit more thoughtful or measured about your decision-making?
